Amazing rhino news!
Black rhinos have made a HISTORIC return to northern Kenya with the help of pioneering science developed at Chester Zoo.
50 years after being poached to extinction in the Loisaba area of northern Kenya, 21 critically endangered black rhinos have just been translocated back to this native part of their range.
Scientists from Chester Zoo have been working with the Kenyan Government’s Wildlife Research and Training Institute to help with this momentous translocation. Based on innovative technology and research techniques developed at the zoo over the last 15 years, which use hormone monitoring to provide crucial insights into the health of rhinos
One of Chester Zoo's Conservation Scholars also monitored the rhinos’ physiology before they moved to ensure they were fit and healthy to make their historic journey. They will now be using the techniques pioneered at the zoo to closely monitor these rare animals as they settle into their new home. Establishing new populations like this is vital for the continued recovery of black rhino numbers.
The Zoo said "This is a hugely proud moment for us and all those involved in this incredible conservation success story."
