Trapped deer rescued from chicken wire

A deer that was trapped in chicken wire had to be rescued in a "tricky and dangerous" late-night operation. 

Firefighters, as well an RSPCA inspector, were alerted to the animal caught in wire, off Rede Lane in Barham, Ipswich, by a dog walker on January 18.

The deer's antlers were trapped in the netting and was stressed by the ordeal.

RSPCA inspector Jason Finch covered its head in a towel while firefighters secured him by a tree, before working to cut the wire.

He said: “Thankfully the deer had been spotted by a dog walker who was able to alert us to his plight. The deer was so stressed he had been thrashing around and as a result the wire mesh had wrapped around his body.

“It took almost an hour to cut him free because of the type of wire it was, and it was a tricky and dangerous rescue that needed to be carried out carefully.

“The moment when we cut the deer free was just amazing - we were all just over the moon that this was a happy outcome for such an incredible and powerful animal.”
