UK soap star adopts smuggled puppy

Dachshund pup Karen-Jean didn’t have the best start in life, but her fortune changed when she was rescued – and then adopted by Coronation Street star Daniel Brocklebank.

Like many other puppies sold to unsuspecting members of the public in the UK, Karen was born in a puppy farm in Eastern Europe and was being smuggled into the UK along with her litter mates.

Daniel, known to the public as Billy Mayhew in Coronation Street, said, “Both Karen-Jean and Colin [who is his second rescued dog] had really tough starts in life. Sadly not every smuggled puppy is as lucky as they are to be rescued and find a happy home.

Many suffer life-threatening health conditions, and some don’t survive, leaving the families who did try to help them helpless and heartbroken – as well as out of pocket.

Although Lucy's Law [named after a breeding spaniel who was rescued from a puppy farm in South Wales, UK, in 2013] is now in effect in the UK, and means that buying a puppy directly from the breeder has become mandatory, this has not entirely solved the problem, and these vile people will often try to scam buyers with fake paperworl - and sometimes even a fake mother dog - all the while, selling the pups from a home rented for the purpose to make it seem like they come from a loving family environment. Therefore, it is still so important to be vigilant when looking to add a puppy to your family, and, if you have any doubts or feel pressured to buy, as hard as it may be, walk away and report it.
